Sandees and Sams Pup Page
Sandees Pups Are Here !!
Feb. 26th 2009 : Sandee went into labor about 5 p.m. with all the typical behavior. She proceeded to "nest" which basically means she messed up and rearranged all the carefully laid blankets and whelping pads in her whelping area ... I worked for 30 minutes getting them situated for her and she just had a blast messing everything up in a pile. Aww well.. Whatever makes you comfortable Sandee , I have no problem with it.. She does all the work so she deserves to feel comfortable.
9p.m. First pup born was a big beautiful 18 oz flashy fawn female.
9:30 Female #2 a 17oz classic fawn female with a very dark face (a Sampson look alike)
10:05 First male pup born a 16 & 1/4 oz Flashy fawn male with a thin white collar and long white socks. Gorgeous puppy. After this pup is born Sandee takes a long break , drinks some water, eats a few bites of boiled chicken. I always keep boiled chicken cooked and put in freezer bags for mydogs. It'an easily microwaved and warmed meal and a good protein source to provide some energy in special circumstances.
12:50 a.m. the 27th of Feb.....Classic fawn male 16 oz pup is born. He has white on his toes & chest. Nice looking classic fawn with dark muzzle. He has the coloring of Sam but seems to have the face/head shape of Sandee.. a tad more narrow muzzle and pronounced muzzle stop.
1:15 a.m. Female #3 is flashy fawn with lots of white markings. She weighed in at 14 oz. and the smallest of the litter. Very nice main coat coloring and brilliant white markings.
1:25 a.m. I was not finished drying off pup 5 before this pup presented himself, he was in a hurry to come into the world.. A nice Flashy Fawn male weighing 15 & 1/2 oz at birth.
Sunday March 1st. We have 3 families on the list for a puppy. As soon as their eyes are open . We will have visitors & the families can choose their pups and pay a deposit to hold their choice.
The puppies spend 80 % of their time nursing and the rest of the time sleeping. They are scooting around in the whelping area and building up their leg muscles. Every thing looks good.
We have an appointment at the vets office in the morning to have their tails and dew claws done.
Monday March 2nd: We all went to the vets office today. Pups tails were docked and dewclaws done. Our vet said everything looks good so far. Strong puppies were so wiggly it was a bit hard to get the job accomplished..the one time I stuck my head in the room to check the progress the Dr. looked up at me and said MY GOODNESS these pups are strong. .. so things went well. This is one of the things about being a boxer breeder that I DO NOT LIKE.. everything else is great.. its just docking those babies tails.. it's so hard on ME.. not them.. ME lol..
Friday March 6th: I just love puppies. I have spent almost the whole day cuddling and petting the pups. These babies love to snuggle. Sandee is a good mom, she does give me a "look" though when I mess with her babies. But she knows I will not harm them so she allows me to pick them up and examine them without any trouble. This is her first litter so I am extra cautious until I learn what she is o.k. with. Mother dogs are a lot like us human moms in a lot of respects. Some are very easy going, some are uptight and worried all the time. Sandee seems to fall about in the middle of this range.
The pups tail docking is healing nicely. I took the stitches out on 4 pups last night. 2 pups dew claw areas looked a bit nasty so I applied some antibiotic ointment , and today they look fine and starting to heal cleaner. These areas will occasionally leave tiny scars but usually not very noticeable.
Sunday March 8: I see eyes !!!.. some of the pups eyes are starting to open.. I can sit and watch them trying to see , it's so cute. They move their heads in such an odd way (up and down, side to side) like someone trying to focus on something they just CAN'T quite see yet. Almost like little bobble-head dogs..I think they are just seeing shadows and light for the first couple of days..then their sight gets better slowly over the next few days.
Pups legs are also getting stronger and they are trying to stand. They stand up and fall over , they are still a little top heavy I guess. I have rubber padding down in the whelping box and whelping pads over that so no danger of hurting themselves when they fall over.
Friday March 13th: The pups eyes are completely open now. We had our first visitors to see the pups today. Teresa and her son Ryan. They chose their male puppy (#1 pup with white diamond on his neck), and paid the deposit to hold him. I think they will be quite happy with this good looking male pup.
Sunday March 15th: We now have only 2 males pups left available.
We had visitors yesterday Annette and Wendy, they have reserved the larger flashy fawn female puppy. We had a very nice visit with the pups and all my dogs made new friends. Our Junior once again made a nuisance of himself..he is just so routy and rambunctious and loves everyone.
I gave the pups their deworming medicine last night, they were very cooperative with only a tiny bit of fuss. I also clipped all their nails again so they won't scratch Sandee so bad while nursing. I agree with my vet, these pups are strong pups and clipping nails is not their favorite thing to have done :-) but I managed to get it done.
Thursday March 19th: The pups are walking everywhere now, they still cannot run they will fall over. Also starting to growl at each other and play/ fight. I have even heard a couple of little puppy barks. They are getting so fiesty and cute.
Monday March 23rd: The puppies are getting bolder and investigating everything in the bedroom. I have a large dog crate in there and I found 2 of the pups in the crate trying to find the open door they went in so they could get back out. I will introduce them to potty pads tomorrow if Sandee doesnt' shred them. If she does , I will have to wait another couple of weeks for when she starts weaning them. They will spend more time in the livingroom with me at that point. I can help them learn to use the potty pads (hopefully lol).
Monday March 30th: We had visitors yesterday. Wendy and Annette and Annettes sister and friend and kiddos.. we had a nice housefull.. visiting and cuddling the pups. So all the puppies got a little extra cuddle time and socialization. The children were so gentle and careful , very well behaved.. There is nothing better than a kid with a puppy. Very nice family and friends, we had a good visit. Their pup Daisy is going to be spoiled rotten. :-)
I gave the pups their second dose of 3 total doses of deworming medicine this morning.
AND I have an announcement.. oh NOOOO , little miss Sandee has now put her foot down, the pups are eating so much puppy chow she is going to stop nursing them quite soon...AND she has quit cleaning up after them as well. She has been an absolutely perfect mom. But I think she is about ready for them to graduate.. I will now be cleaning up much more.. Sandee has done a wonderful job with the pups. She has kept those pups fat and sassy, but they have teeth now and she has just about had it with them chewing on her I think. I will continue to let her stay with them. But I will feed them 4 times a day , small meals of puppy chow all during the day. They will be weaned from Sandee within the week, and Sandee can begin to gain her weight back. As soon as they are weaned completely they will be moved to the livingroom. Then the fun starts lol.. wish me luck everyone.
I also forgot to update when I gave the first vaccination to guard against parvo ( parvo is a highly deadly virus to pups) Friday the 27th .. They will have another vaccination which will be a combination vaccine at their 6 weeks check up at my vets office.
Monday April 6th: I moved Sandee out Saturday, she was completely finished weaning. The pups are now in the livingroom and in crates when they are not out on the floor playing. They occasionally find the potty pads to use :-( the rest of the time I am rushing over to help them find the potty pads lol. 3 pups are doing really well..other 3 pups need a bit more work in this area. They All want out of the crates to go potty so that is a good sign. Of course it means a bit of sleep deprivation for me. But that's fine. I want them to have a good start on crate training for when they go to their new homes.
The past 2 days there has been a bit of problem with diarrhea (yep nasty subject I know). I am taking the 2 pups with the issues to the vet today to have things checked out. If there is something that needs to be addressed (switching wormers) or adding a medication we will apply it to the whole litter. It may just be the total weaning and adding more puppy chow food that has upset their systems a little. Whatever it is I will write the treatment in their charts for when you take your pup home so your vet will know what has been done and why.
Thursday April 9th: The pups were checked out at the vet Monday and he prescribed a medicine to stop the diarrhea problems. They are doing much better now. They never got sick from it, still played just like normal and are still eating well. They were given their first combination vaccination today , no problems from that. So everything looks fine, and is much better for me since the diarrhea has subsided (whewwww ) lol. Two of the puppies lost a few ounces of weight from the "problem", but they will quickly gain that back.
Tuesday April 14th: What is Mr. President thinking ?? A Portuguese Water Dog? NOT a BOXER.. Oh sorry I got a little side-tracked.
Now about these puppies.. WE ALL slept thru the night for the past 2 nights it was wonderful !!! They eat breakfast , then a short nap after breakfast then they get out to play and potty & potty & potty :-) .. They eat their evening meal about 5 p.m. and rest a little while in the crates then they play more and get all tired out and sleep all night. They go to their crates about 11p.m. and have slept until 6:30 or 7a.m. As close as you can get to this schedule should work well for new families and pups. If someone is home (hopefully there will be) you can add a light meal during the middle of the day.. But the largest meal should be breakfast (since they have gone all night with no food) with plenty of time out of the crate to potty afterwards.
Friday April 17th: The pups are getting so big. They weigh anywhere from 8 and 3/4ths lb (females)..to 10 lbs for two of the biggest males. They are just about ready to go home. Is everyone counting down the days?
Tuesday April 21st: AWWW all my puppies are going home..:-( It's getting quieter here at night lol.. But as my hubby says I can't keep them all. I just ask "why not". But as Wendy and Annette saw yesterday when they came to get their Daisy, HE's a softy to lol. In every litter there's 1 or 2 that my hubby just adores. Daisy was one of them from this litter. But she has a loving adoring family and will be spoiled rotten I am certain of that. We have 2 pups left to go. Mr. Bentley will be going home Friday. I think we have decided to keep the little runt baby girl from this litter. She is precious and yep you guessed it, my hubby is "putting his foot down" lol..whatever the "master" says hahahaha..my goodness, I hope my hubby never reads this I will never live it down.
O.K. so far so good, everyone seems extremely pleased with their puppies. Sandee and Sampson have done very well for themselves. We have some happy Boxer families.
Saturday April 25th: The last of the puppies went home today. Chance came over and took "Chief" back home with him to Tyler TX. While he was here, we went outside and visited with Sampson. Sam seemed to make quite an impression. Sampson is pure muscle but such a big baby.
The new pup families have all promised some update pictures as their pups grow up. When I get new pictures of them I will be putting a few in the gallery. I want to thank all the new families. It was nice meeting everyone. I feel very comfortable that this litter of pups will be welcomed members of their families..loved and well cared for. Hey guys... go sign my guestbook when you have the time.. thanks and tata for now.
